Narrow lanes, stone towers, and patrician houses surround you as your guide introduces Regensburg’s unique role as a former Roman settlement, imperial city, and trading powerhouse on the Danube.

With a private guide, the route and focus adapt to you—architecture, Roman history, medieval politics, or daily life past and present.

Old Town of Regensburg & Stadtamhof

The Regensburg Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest preserved medieval city north of the Alps. With more than 1,500 historic buildings, it forms a breathtaking cityscape of towers, patrician houses, narrow alleyways, and lively squares. At its heart rises Regensburg Cathedral (St. Peter’s Cathedral), a masterpiece of Bavarian Gothic architecture and home to the world-famous Regensburger Domspatzen, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in the world.

Just a short walk from the starting point near the train station, we pass Schloss Thurn und Taxis, a remarkable city palace that originated as the 13th-century Abbey of St. Emmeram and remains the residence of the Thurn und Taxis family—one of the few noble palaces in Germany still in private use today.

From here, we continue straight into the Old Town, where ancient alleyways lead us past the Old Town Hall, the cathedral precinct, and onward to the iconic Stone Bridge, once the key crossing of the Danube for medieval trade routes. Along the way, there are plenty of photo opportunities, charming souvenir shops, and cozy cafés and restaurants that bring Regensburg’s history to life.

The walk also connects the Old Town with Stadtamhof, once an independent settlement and today an atmospheric quarter with beautiful river views. The tour concludes conveniently near the central station, leaving you perfectly placed to continue exploring Regensburg at your own pace.
