Cathedral St. Stephan (Dom St. Stephan) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Passau. Towering above the city with its magnificent Baroque design, the cathedral features an awe-inspiring façade, grand interiors, and one of the largest church organs in the world. It is dedicated to St. Stephan, the patron saint of Passau, and serves as the seat of the Diocese of Passau. With its majestic structure and vibrant history, the cathedral is a must-see for anyone visiting this beautiful town.
Inside, visitors are treated to intricate frescoes, stunning altars, and a sense of spiritual tranquility. The cathedral’s interior is as breathtaking as its exterior, with high arches and gilded details that reflect the Baroque style’s elegance. Don’t miss the chance to experience the organ’s sound, especially during one of the cathedral’s famous concerts or services.
The history of Cathedral St. Stephan dates back to the 8th century, though the current structure was built between 1668 and 1693 in the Baroque style after a fire destroyed the earlier Romanesque church. The design was influenced by renowned architect Carlo Lurago, with construction overseen by the Bishop of Passau, who wanted to create a cathedral that could match the grandeur of other European churches.
The cathedral’s most remarkable feature is its organ, which boasts over 17,000 pipes and 233 stops, making it one of the largest in the world. The instrument was installed in the 1920s and remains an exceptional feature, played during concerts and services. The church’s Baroque elements, including beautiful frescoes by artists such as Bartolomeo Altomonte, add to its historical and artistic significance.
