Nestled in the picturesque Alpine foothills of Bavaria, Hohenschwangau Castle is a charming neo-Gothic palace that transports visitors back to the Romantic era. With its golden-yellow façade, elegant towers, and stunning mountain backdrop, the castle looks like something out of a storybook.
Originally a medieval fortress, King Maximilian II of Bavaria transformed it into a royal summer residence in the 19th century. His son, King Ludwig II, spent much of his childhood here, drawing inspiration for his own masterpiece, Neuschwanstein Castle, which stands nearby. Inside, visitors can admire lavish murals, opulent furnishings, and breathtaking views of the Alpsee Lake, making it a must-visit destination for history lovers and fairytale dreamers alike.
The origins of Hohenschwangau Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was a fortress of the Knights of Schwangau. However, after centuries of warfare and neglect, the castle fell into ruin.
In 1832, Crown Prince Maximilian II discovered the site and decided to rebuild it as a romantic retreat. Inspired by the Gothic Revival style, he designed the castle to reflect the legends and myths of medieval Germany. The walls of its rooms are adorned with over 90 murals depicting heroic sagas, adding to the castle’s enchanting atmosphere.
King Ludwig II, known as the Fairy Tale King, grew up within these walls, fostering his love for mythology, music, and grand architecture—passions that later shaped his vision for Neuschwanstein Castle. Today, Hohenschwangau remains a testament to Bavarian royal heritage, offering a glimpse into the life and inspirations of one of Germany’s most famous monarchs.
