Embark on one of the most breathtaking and dramatic hikes in the Bavarian Forest National Park: the ascent to Mount Lusen (1,373 m) via the mystical Teufelsloch (“Devil’s Hole”) and the legendary Himmelsleiter (“Stairway to Heaven”). This loop trail takes you through deep forests, across wild boulder fields, and up steep granite steps that seem to reach for the sky.
Starting in Waldhäuser, you’ll dive into a fairytale landscape shaped by nature and legends. The trail passes through moss-covered boulders in Teufelsloch – a mythical ravine said to be the playground of forest spirits – before the adventure really kicks in with the climb up the Himmelsleiter: a steep staircase of natural stone slabs winding its way to the summit.
At the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views stretching over the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests, and on clear days, even as far as the Alps.
Perfect for experienced hikers looking for a bit of magic and a good sweat!
