The origins of Bamberg’s Old Town Hall date back to the 14th century. According to legend, the bishop of Bamberg refused to grant land to the townspeople for a city hall, so they created their own by constructing an artificial island in the middle of the river. The current structure, completed in the 18th century, is a stunning blend of medieval and Baroque architectural styles, featuring elaborate exterior frescoes and a distinctive half-timbered section. Over the centuries, it has served various administrative and civic functions, making it a vital part of Bamberg’s heritage.

Getting There – The Scenic Route

Bamberg is well-connected by train, with frequent services from major cities like Nuremberg (about 50 minutes) and Munich (roughly 2.5 hours). From Bamberg’s central train station, the Old Town Hall is about a 15-minute walk through the charming old town. If arriving by car, parking is available at nearby garages such as “Parkhaus Zentrum Nord.” The town itself is best explored on foot, as many areas are pedestrian-only.

The Old Town Hall itself is free to visit from the outside. However, visitors can enter the Ludwig Collection and the Porcelain Museum, located inside, for a small fee:
