Nestled in the heart of Berchtesgaden National Park, Lake Königssee is Bavaria’s emerald-green wonder. Surrounded by steep, towering mountains, it’s often described as Germany’s fjord. The moment you set foot here, the breathtaking scenery and serene waters will transport you to another world. Whether you’re gliding across the lake in a silent electric boat or hiking to hidden vantage points, this is an experience you won’t forget.
Lake Königssee has enchanted visitors for centuries. It was once a favorite retreat for Bavarian kings and nobles, seeking peace in its unspoiled nature. The famous St. Bartholomew’s Church, with its distinctive red onion domes, has stood on the lake’s western shore since 1134. Fishermen have plied these waters for generations, preserving traditions like serving fresh-caught Königssee trout at the lakeside inns. During World War II, the nearby Obersalzberg was a key Nazi stronghold, adding a historical layer to the region’s significance.
Lake Königssee is easily accessible from Berchtesgaden and Salzburg.
