Nestled in the southeastern corner of Bavaria, Berchtesgaden National Park is a pristine alpine paradise where nature reigns supreme. Towering peaks, crystal-clear lakes, deep gorges, and ancient forests come together in Germany’s only Alpine national park — a haven for hikers, photographers, and peace-seekers alike.
From the majestic Watzmann mountain to the emerald waters of Königssee, this protected area offers breathtaking views and unforgettable adventures for all seasons.
Established in 1978, Berchtesgaden National Park covers more than 210 square kilometers of rugged alpine terrain. It was created to preserve the unique biodiversity and geological features of the Berchtesgaden Alps — and to let nature take its course.
Here, nature is truly left to be wild. No forestry, no hunting — just the slow rhythm of growth, decay, and rebirth. This makes the park a pioneering project in rewilding and natural conservation in Europe.
The area has a deep cultural and historical connection too. From old salt trade routes to mountaineering legends and nearby WWII history (Obersalzberg and the Eagle’s Nest), this region is steeped in stories.
The park is easy to reach and well-connected by both public transport and car.
By Car:
From Munich, it’s about a 2-hour drive (160 km) via the A8 towards Salzburg. Take the Bad Reichenhall or Berchtesgaden exit.
By Train:
From Munich or Salzburg, take a regional train to Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof (Main Station). From there, local buses connect you to various points in the park like Königssee, Ramsau, and Hintersee.
Public Transport Tip: The RVO bus network is excellent. With the Gästekarte (guest card) from local accommodations, you can often use buses for free.
Entry to Berchtesgaden National Park is completely free.
That’s right — no entry fees to experience one of Europe’s most beautiful wild spaces.
However, some facilities or nearby attractions may charge separately:
🚤 Boat ride on Lake Königssee: from €20.00 (round trip to St. Bartholomä)
🏛️ Haus der Berge (Visitor Center) in Berchtesgaden: €6 adults / €3 reduced
🚌 Bus to Wimbachklamm gorge or Hintersee: RVO fares apply unless you have a Gästekarte
The park is open year-round, 24/7 for hikers and visitors.
Haus der Berge Visitor Center: Daily 9:00 – 17:00 (closed Mondays in winter)
Go Early or Late – For popular spots like Lake Königssee or Watzmannhaus trails, visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.
✅ Don’t Miss Hidden Gems:
Wimbachklamm Gorge: Short but stunning hike through a narrow ravine with wooden walkways.
Hintersee & Magic Forest: A fairy-tale landscape of mossy stones and misty trees.
Funtensee: Known as Germany’s coldest place — an epic hike with epic views.
✅ Pack for Weather – The mountains can shift quickly. Even in summer, bring a light rain jacket and proper footwear.
✅ Stay Longer – Base yourself in Ramsau, Schönau, or Berchtesgaden to explore the region fully. Each has alpine charm, great guesthouses, and easy access to trails.
✅ Local Cuisine – Try a hearty Kaiserschmarrn or a plate of Kasnocken at a rustic hut like the Gotzenalm or Watzmannhaus.
