Where Bavarian nature meets medieval legend – this unforgettable hike starts in the charming town of Riedenburg and winds through the stunning Altmühl Valley, past limestone cliffs, lush forests, and the legendary Gorgeous Gorge (Schönheits-Schlucht), all the way up to the fairy-tale Prunn Castle perched high above the valley. This is classic Bavaria: raw beauty, hidden paths, and a dash of medieval magic.
This moderately challenging hike offers the perfect mix of nature, adventure, and history. You’ll begin in Riedenburg, known as the “Pearl of the Altmühl Valley”, and follow a scenic trail into the forested gorge—a narrow, mossy canyon carved through limestone that truly earns its name.
The trail climbs steadily but rewardingly, with breathtaking views and plenty of photo stops. Along the way, you’re surrounded by rugged rock formations, spring-fed brooks, and the peaceful sounds of nature. Eventually, you emerge at Prunn Castle—dramatically perched on a cliff, offering sweeping views over the valley below and a step back into medieval times.
Inside the castle, discover tales of knights, noble families, and even the famed Nibelungenlied manuscript, once housed here.
