The Eagle’s Nest was constructed in 1938 as a birthday gift for Adolf Hitler, commissioned by Martin Bormann and funded by the Nazi Party. It was designed as a retreat and meeting place for high-ranking officials, though Hitler reportedly visited it only a handful of times due to his fear of heights. Unlike other Nazi structures, the Eagle’s Nest remained largely undamaged during World War II. After the war, it was taken over by U.S. forces and later handed back to Germany. Today, it is managed as a historical site and mountain restaurant, with its original tunnel and brass elevator still in use.

Getting There – The Scenic Route

The Eagle’s Nest is located near Berchtesgaden, Germany, in the Bavarian Alps. Private vehicles are not allowed beyond a certain point, but visitors can reach it by:

Bus: Take the special shuttle buses from the Dokumentation Obersalzberg parking area to the Eagle’s Nest access point.

Hiking: A challenging yet rewarding option is the steep 2-hour hike from Obersalzberg.

Brass Elevator: After arriving at the bus stop, visitors must walk through a 124-meter-long tunnel and take the historic elevator up to the summit

• Hiking: Free entry, but the elevator ride must be paid separately
