Perched atop the Kehlstein Mountain at an altitude of 1,834 meters (6,017 feet), the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) offers stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. Originally built as a diplomatic meeting house for Adolf Hitler, today it serves as a historic site, restaurant, and scenic viewpoint, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Despite its origins, the Eagle’s Nest has become a symbol of remembrance and a must-visit attraction for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
The Eagle’s Nest was constructed in 1938 as a birthday gift for Adolf Hitler, commissioned by Martin Bormann and funded by the Nazi Party. It was designed as a retreat and meeting place for high-ranking officials, though Hitler reportedly visited it only a handful of times due to his fear of heights. Unlike other Nazi structures, the Eagle’s Nest remained largely undamaged during World War II. After the war, it was taken over by U.S. forces and later handed back to Germany. Today, it is managed as a historical site and mountain restaurant, with its original tunnel and brass elevator still in use.
The Eagle’s Nest is located near Berchtesgaden, Germany, in the Bavarian Alps. Private vehicles are not allowed beyond a certain point, but visitors can reach it by:
Bus: Take the special shuttle buses from the Dokumentation Obersalzberg parking area to the Eagle’s Nest access point.
Hiking: A challenging yet rewarding option is the steep 2-hour hike from Obersalzberg.
Brass Elevator: After arriving at the bus stop, visitors must walk through a 124-meter-long tunnel and take the historic elevator up to the summit
Adults: Approx. €30 (includes shuttle bus & elevator ride)
Children (6-14 years): Reduced prices available
Hiking: Free entry, but the elevator ride must be paid separately
Season: Mid-May to late October (weather permitting)
Daily: 08:30 AM – 04:00 PM
A visit to the Eagle’s Nest is an unforgettable experience, combining breathtaking alpine beauty with a significant historical past. Whether you go for the views, the history, or the adventure, it’s a must-see destination in Bavaria.
