Perched high on a rugged hill in the Bavarian Alps, Neuschwanstein Castle is the very definition of a fairytale come to life. With its soaring towers, breathtaking mountain backdrop, and dreamlike architecture, it’s no wonder this castle inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Commissioned by the reclusive King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Neuschwanstein is a masterpiece of Romanticism, blending medieval charm with 19th-century luxury. Today, it stands as one of Germany’s most iconic landmarks, drawing over a million visitors each year.
Neuschwanstein Castle was the ambitious vision of King Ludwig II, who sought to create a fantastical retreat away from public life. Construction began in 1869, but Ludwig’s dream was never fully realized—he died under mysterious circumstances in 1886, just days after being declared unfit to rule. The castle was opened to the public shortly after his death, transforming from a private sanctuary into one of the world’s most visited castles. Inside, visitors can marvel at opulent halls, intricate frescoes depicting Wagnerian legends, and the king’s extravagant Throne Room, though ironically, no throne was ever placed there.
