Welcome to one of the most scenic hikes in the Allgäu Alps – the Oytal Loop from Oberstdorf! This breathtaking circular trail takes you deep into the Oytal valley, where dramatic mountain backdrops, rushing alpine streams, and flower-filled meadows come together in perfect harmony. The trail winds gently through forests and open valley floors, passing landmarks like the Oytalhaus (a perfect stop for a cold Radler or Kaiserschmarrn) and offering stunning views of the Mädelegabel, Trettachspitze, and other iconic peaks.
Ideal for nature lovers and active travelers, the Oytal loop offers a mix of peaceful solitude and classic alpine charm. Whether you’re here in spring when waterfalls roar with snowmelt, or during golden autumn days, this hike is a soul-filling experience.
Start from Oberstdorf Train Station, which is well connected by Deutsche Bahn from major cities like Munich, Kempten, or Ulm. From the station, it’s a short walk through the charming village to reach the trailhead near the Marktplatz or follow signs to Oytalstraße.
If you’re driving, park at the P1/P2 parking lots near the town center – but arrive early during peak season as these fill up quickly!

Duration: 4.5 to 6 hours, depending on pace and stops
Elevation gain: approx. 450 m
Difficulty: Moderate – suitable for fit beginners and experienced hikers alike
Start early to enjoy the morning light in the valley and avoid afternoon crowds.
Stop at Oytalhaus for refreshments – they have great local dishes and a sunny terrace.
For a fun twist, rent a scooter (Bergroller) from the Oytalhaus to ride back downhill to Oberstdorf!
Bring good hiking shoes, as some sections may be muddy or uneven after rain.
Carry enough water, though there are refreshment stops along the way.
Explore the nearby Breitachklamm, one of Europe’s deepest gorges – just a short drive or bus ride away.
Take the Nebelhornbahn cable car for jaw-dropping panoramic views and alpine trails.
Oberstdorf itself is a gem – enjoy traditional Allgäu cuisine, cozy cafés, and local shops.
Visit in late September to witness the traditional Almabtrieb, when decorated cows return from the high pastures.
