Right in the heart of Munich’s old town, just steps from Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt is where Munich truly comes alive. Since 1807, locals and visitors have wandered its colorful stalls, tasting fresh produce, Bavarian specialties, and delicacies from around the world.
More than just a market, it’s Munich’s living kitchen, meeting place, and open-air museum all in one – located in the Old Town near Marienplatz, typically open Monday to Saturday from about 8:00 to 20:00 (with the beer garden often open later), closed on Sundays and public holidays, and home to more than 100 stalls offering food, flowers, spices, and crafts in a relaxed, traditional Bavarian atmosphere. Whether you’re grabbing a quick pretzel or enjoying a long beer garden lunch, the Viktualienmarkt is Munich at its most authentic.
The market began in 1807, when King Maximilian I ordered Munich’s overcrowded farmers’ market moved from Marienplatz to its current location.
Over the centuries, the market survived wars, rebuilding, and modernization. Even after heavy damage during World War II, Munich rebuilt the Viktualienmarkt with love and care – keeping its small stalls, family-run shops, and community spirit alive.
The colorful maypoles you see today represent Munich’s guild traditions and local crafts, reminding visitors of the market’s deep Bavarian roots.
