A Square Through the Ages

Marienplatz was first mentioned in historical records in 1158 when Duke Henry the Lion designated it as the main marketplace of Munich. For centuries, it served as a political, economic, and social hub — a place for markets, celebrations, public gatherings, and announcements.

Its name, which means “St. Mary’s Square,” dates from 1638, when a Marian column was erected in the square to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years’ War. From that moment on, Marienplatz became not only a commercial centre but a symbolic heart of the city.

• Nearest public parking garages: Stachus/Karlsplatz, Sparkassenstraße, Marienhof

• A short walk from any central garage brings you directly to the square

Driving to Marienplatz is possible, but most visitors combine it with a walk through the historic centre.

By Train (S-Bahn / U-Bahn)

• S-Bahn: Lines S1–S8 stop at Marienplatz station

• U-Bahn: Lines U3 and U6 also stop at Marienplatz

• Direct access from Munich Central Station in just a few minutes

By Bus / Tram

• Arrive before the Glockenspiel: The animated carillon show usually takes place at 11:00, 12:00 and (in summer) 17:00 daily — it’s one of the most popular photo moments in Munich.

• Seasonal highlights: During winter, the Christmas market transforms the square into a festive wonderland.
