Some Information about the Trail

The trail winds gently around the entire lake, offering ever-changing perspectives of its emerald-green water, rugged islands, and towering alpine backdrop. Along the way, you’ll pass quiet bays, cross wooden footbridges, and catch Instagram-worthy views of the Zugspitze mirrored on the lake’s surface. The path is well-maintained, mostly flat, and suitable for families with children or casual hikers.

Getting to the Starting Point

• By Car: Drive to Eibsee Parkplatz near Grainau. Paid parking is available right at the trailhead. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, it’s about a 20-minute scenic drive.

• By Train & Bus: Take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then hop on the Eibsee bus (Line Eibsee-Bus or Zugspitzbahn cogwheel train) directly to the lake.

• Length: approx. 7.5 km (4.6 miles)

• Duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours (depending on pace and photo stops)

• Elevation gain: Minimal, mostly flat trail

• Start early for the best light and fewer crowds.

• Wear sturdy shoes, especially if you want to explore some of the rocky viewpoints along the lake.

• Picnic possibilities abound! Or stop at the Eibsee Hotel Biergarten for a snack with a view.

• The loop can be walked in either direction – clockwise offers more direct views of the Zugspitze earlier in the hike.
