At the centre of Munich’s rhythm and identity lies Marienplatz, a vibrant public square that has been the city’s focal point for over 800 years. With its mix of medieval roots, grand architecture, and bustling urban energy, Marienplatz is much more than a destination — it’s where Munich’s past and present converge in full view.
From seasonal markets and street performers to the world-famous Glockenspiel show, this square captures the city’s spirit like no other place.
Marienplatz was first mentioned in historical records in 1158 when Duke Henry the Lion designated it as the main marketplace of Munich. For centuries, it served as a political, economic, and social hub — a place for markets, celebrations, public gatherings, and announcements.
Its name, which means “St. Mary’s Square,” dates from 1638, when a Marian column was erected in the square to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years’ War. From that moment on, Marienplatz became not only a commercial centre but a symbolic heart of the city.
Surrounding the square are architectural gems that trace Munich’s story: the neo-Gothic splendour of the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), the elegant façades of historic buildings, and the welcoming portals of cafés and shops. The square saw parades, demonstrations, celebrations, and countless everyday moments, making it a living testament to Munich’s urban evolution.
Marienplatz is located in the very core of Munich’s city centre and is exceptionally well connected.
