A Mountain of History

For centuries, the Zugspitze inspired both respect and curiosity. Its first successful ascent in 1820 was carried out by Bavarian surveyors tasked with determining whether it was truly Germany’s highest mountain — a fact they confirmed after a demanding climb.

The mountain later became a symbol of alpine engineering. The Zugspitze cogwheel railway, completed in 1930, was a remarkable technical achievement, followed by successive generations of cable cars that made the summit accessible without mountaineering experience. Today’s modern cable car system continues this tradition, combining innovation with the dramatic natural environment.

Near the summit, the golden summit cross stands as a quiet landmark — not marking a church or monument, but symbolising human presence in one of Bavaria’s most extreme natural settings.

Getting There – The Scenic Route

Reaching the Zugspitze is straightforward thanks to excellent transport connections in southern Bavaria. Most routes lead via the alpine hub of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the main gateway to Germany’s highest mountain.

By Car: 

Driving offers the greatest flexibility and is ideal for visitors who want to combine the Zugspitze with other Alpine sights.

• From Munich: approx. 1.5 hours via the A95 motorway

• Follow signs toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then continue to Eibsee (for the cable car) or the Zugspitze Railway stations

• Parking is available at Eibsee, at the cable car base station, and near the cogwheel railway

This option is especially convenient for early starts or travelling with families.

By Train: 

Travelling by train is one of the most popular and scenic ways to reach the region.

• Direct regional trains run from Munich Central Station to Garmisch-Partenkirchen

• Journey time: approx. 1 hour 20 minutes

• From Garmisch-Partenkirchen station, continue by:

  • Zugspitze cogwheel railway, or

  • Local bus to Eibsee for the cable car

German Rail tickets often integrate smoothly with local transport connections.

By Bus: 

Buses provide a reliable local connection within the region.

• Regular buses operate between Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Eibsee, and nearby villages

• Bus stops are located close to the cable car base station at Eibsee

• Buses are timed to connect with arriving trains during peak seasons

This option works well for visitors staying locally or travelling without a car.

Ticket prices vary by season and route selection, but typical round-trip prices are:

• Children: reduced fares available

• Families & groups: discounted tickets offered

Tickets generally include access to summit platforms, glacier areas, and public facilities. Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended during busy travel periods.
